Introduction:

To align with the international standards and equivalent regimes in other jurisdictions, the Cayman Islands and BVI significantly expanded beneficial ownership transparency requirements in recent years.The updates primarily aim to enhance transparency concerning beneficial ownership and emphasise the importance of identifying and verifying beneficial owners and controllers of legal entities, which demonstrate their commitments to combat money laundering, tax evasion and terrorist financing. In addition, amendments had been introduced for maintenance of register of members, in order to further strengthen the BVI’s reputation for transparency and international best practice.

It is important for corporate governance and compliance officers and administrators to understand the recent key changes in BVI and Cayman, in order to assess the required actions and forward planning, towards ensuring that there is full compliance going forward.

Ms. Ivy Chow, Director, Tax – Corporate Services, PwC

Ivy has been providing corporate services to Hong Kong listed companies as well as multinational, private and offshore entities. During her time with professional firms for more than 25 years, she has served clients in various sectors including financial services; consumer products and industrial manufacturing, retail and logistics; medical; media and education; real estate industries as well as government and non-profit making enterprises.  Ms. Chow is a Chartered Secretary, a Chartered Governance Professional and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute, The Chartered Governance Institute and the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute.

Ms. Peony Wong, Senior Manager, Tax – Corporate Services, PwC

Peony Wong is currently a Senior Manager of Corporate Services of PwC Corporate Services Limited. She has over 20 years of experience in the company secretarial field and has been providing professional corporate services to Hong Kong listed companies as well as multinational, private and offshore companies. Ms. Wong is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of CPA Australia.
