SUMMARY:20211123 Lunch & Learn Webinar: HK is on the EU’s grey list for tax purposes: the EU’s concerns and the potential changes to the HK tax system
DESCRIPTION:On 5 October 2021\, the European Union (EU) published a revised list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes. Hong Kong is included in the updated grey list (i.e. the watchlist) as the EU considers that a harmful tax regime exists in Hong Kong. The EU reviewed the foreign source income exemption regimes in a number of jurisdictions (including Hong Kong and Singapore) and has concerns about Hong Kong’s offshore regime under which foreign sourced passive income is not taxable. The HKSAR Government issued a press release on the same day in response and indicated that Hong Kong has committed to the EU to amend the Hong Kong tax laws by the end of 2022 and implement relevant measures in 2023.  In this webinar\, the speakers will talk about: \n\nthe background leading to the inclusion of Hong Kong in the EU’s grey list;\nthe HKSAR Government’s response so far;\nthe potential directions of change to the HK offshore regime for passive income; and\nthe implications to HK businesses.\n\n
