The economic substance (ES) law in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) became effective on 1 January 2019 and existing BVI entities carrying out any of the relevant activities are required to comply with the ES requirement from 30 June 2019. In addition to the ES law, the BVI has issued the Draft Economic Substance Code on 24 April 2019 to explain the ES regime in the BVI.
In this "Happy Hour & Learn" event, we are honored to have Ms Sherri Ortiz-Fahie, Director of BVI House Asia, as our guest speaker. At the event, Sherri will share with us the general business environment and the latest development of the ES regime in the BVI. That will be followed by a free and open discussion on the typical business structures involving BVI entities and common issues on complying with the ES requirement of the BVI moderated by Ms. Anita Tsang, the Vice-Chairperson of the International Tax Committee of the Institute.
The "Happy Hour & Learn" event will be in a more causal and informal format than the seminars organised by the Institute. During the event, participants can freely interact with each other and the speaker to exchange views on the topic and raise issues for discussion. Light drinks (including wine and non-alcoholic drinks) will be served during the event.
Sherri Ortiz-Fahie is the Director of the Hong Kong-based BVI House Asia, a representative office of the Government of the British Virgin Islands in the Asia Pacific Region.
She formerly held the position of Executive Director of the BVI International Finance Centre, for the promotion and further development of the BVI’s financial services industry. In this capacity, she has been a spokesperson with local, regional and international media; a speaker at recognized international conferences and events, and the diplomatic liaison between the BVI and international governments.
Ms. Ortiz-Fahie has also served as a Consultant with the Turks and Caicos Financial Services Commission and has more than 30 years of finance and business experience with expertise in financial management.
