Description:

Following our first three seminars of the International Tax Seminar Series where the key international tax concepts, the principal articles in a typical double taxation agreement/arrangement (DTA) as well as the application of DTAs in corporate and individual taxation were discussed, this last seminar of the Series will focus on the practical side of international tax planning.  In particular, the Speakers will discuss the global efforts/initiatives made/taken in response to the implementation of Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project and the major tax challenges facing by multinationals in the post-BEPS world, covering the following:

l   Measures aimed at tackling and curtailing BEPS including the multilateral instrument (MLI) which delivers many of the BEPS recommendations through the implementation of a series of tax treaty related measures and changes to the bilateral tax treaties in existence;

l   Economic substance requirements in tax haven jurisdictions;

l  Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters and other OECD initiatives relevant to international tax planning;

l  Highlight of unilateral tax measures such as the digital service tax and OECD’s recent consultation on “Addressing the Challenges of the Digital Economies”; and

l  Case studies to highlight the risks associated with the existing cross-border structures/transactions commonly used by multinationals and explore the sustainability of the potential tax planning strategies under the current post-BEPS environment.
